Passionate about art cinema, as well as niche electronic equipment, Victor Catona maintains a constant interest in works at the intersection of art and technology.
An important asset is his technical professional background (structural design, electronics), which assists him in the creative process, serving as a discreet means to create and convey emotions.
Artist’s Vision: The artwork (GMND) is an installation consisting of multiple VHS videotapes, each visually labeled with the title of an iconic film. The tapes, arranged seemingly haphazardly, some with tangled tape, are presented in a transport box that carries a specific memory of the era.
The artwork comes to life through activation, as each cassette body is equipped with a minidisplay, imperceptible until that moment. Subsequently, all displays start playing a video sequence synchronously. Following a suggestive introduction, the screens proceed to show the movie posters and representative scenes from each film in succession. After the video sequence ends, the screens fade out one by one for a few seconds, after which the program continues in an infinite loop.
Through the elaborate audio/video script, the artwork references the theme of resurrection, suggesting that even seemingly abandoned, good films revive in a more surprising, powerful, and enduring form. Indirectly, the artwork also acknowledges technological progress, prompting the viewer to mentally trace the incredible evolution from VHS tapes to miniature memory with displays.

De la introducerea culorii și a sunetului, combinate cu o narațiune inovatoare, cinematograful a evoluat într-o formă de artă îndrăzneață, oferind atât cineaștilor, cât și publicului o platformă pentru a-și explora potențialul vast, alături de limitele sale. Istoria cinematografiei reflectă transformări tehnologice semnificative, inclusiv schimbări în ceea ce privește formatele. Diversitatea formatelor a evoluat până la punctul în care anumite generații pot fi nefamiliarizate cu elemente precum rolele de film, benzile VHS sau chiar DVD-urile. Prin lucrarea sa Good Films Never Die, Victor Catona invită privitorul la o călătorie în timp, în epoca benzilor VHS. Victor a selectat șapte casete VHS cu filme cunoscute, subliniind cu abilitate narațiunile din spatele acestora. Implementând o abordare arhivistică, artistul își propune să evidențieze importanța păstrării patrimoniului cinematografic. Lucrările de artă oferă domeniul de juxtapunere între trecut și prezent, evocând o serie de amintiri sau oferind perspective educative din punct de vedere istoric. Proiecția casetelor pe fiecare mic ecran îmbunătățește în plus experiența imersivă, în special prin intermediul buclei infinite prezentate, demonstrând că implicarea cinematografică poate fi profundă fără a fi nevoie de VR sau IMAX.
Good Movie Never Die este un memento emoționant al existenței și moștenirii durabile a benzilor VHS.
